Role of the Catholic Laity

It’s interesting to look back on my life only a year ago, my life before the seminary.  So much has changed, I have gained so much in the span of a year.  When I was home about a month ago, I was talking with my thirteen year old sister, we were talking about prayer and mass, how important they were and it stunned me when she said, “Well, yeah, you have to do that stuff, you’re a seminarian, it’s a part of your life.”  I began to think then and realized that even I had come to believe, before the seminary, that the Catholic Church is priests and a few holy people.  It’s not, its the laity that are the Church, and the ordained are it’s servants.  I’ve come to realize this over time, I’ve seen so many good lay people that are devoted to God with their life.  I see now that the Church encompasses the young, the old, the priestly, the married, all of God’s children.  But what is the life of the lay?  If I am called to be the priest, what are the laity called to?  First and foremost the laity are called to be examples of Christ to the world.  It is from this that all other callings stem, whether married, celibate, priesthood, or any particular calling.  I will give two specific examples, the Catholic family which should be a model to society, and the Catholic laity as ambassadors to our world today.  But first, the Catholic laity as examples of Christ.

“For we must all “practice the truth in love, and so grow up in all things in Him who is Head, Christ””(Lumen Gentium, para. 30).  There are over one billion Catholics in the world today, if there were over one billion examples of Christ in the world today, I guarantee the world would be much different.  Every Catholic was baptized as priest, prophet, and king.  That means that every Catholic has been called to sacrifice, to proclaim, and to rule.

The priestly aspect of the laity is closely linked to the ordained priesthood.  The lay are all called to sacrifice, Jesus did not die on the cross just for the ordained, He died for all, and so all must sacrifice as He did.  This sacrifice is part of the daily life, “For all their works, prayers, and apostolic endeavors, their ordinary married and family life, their daily occupations, their physical and mental relaxation, if carried out in the Spirit, and even the hardships of life, if patiently borne-all these become “spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ””(Lumen Gentium, para. 34).  As Christ suffered, so must the laity suffer to receive the grace of the Spirit.  It is in the celebration of the Eucharist that these sacrifices can be offered up to God through the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.  This is true of all Catholics, those of the past, those of the present, and those of the future.

How is the Catholic Church to grow in today’s society unless the laity proclaims the message of Christ in their lives and in their words?  This is the prophetic aspect of the laity.  The laity makes up the majority of the Church, for that same Church to grow into fulfillment each member must proclaim Christ’s message. Each member must be a witness to the faith and to the love of Christ as they perform their actions in this life.  To do all of this the laity must strive to reveal the truth of the faith within their lives.  They must strive to learn the truth Christ has revealed to all within His Church.  The laity must be a body of active learners and proficient teachers, “still it remains for each one of them to cooperate in the external spread and the dynamic growth of the Kingdom of Christ in the world”(Lumen Gentium, para. 35).

The final aspect of the laity, is the laity as king.  “Now Christ has communicated  this royal power to His disciples that they might be constituted in royal freedom and that by true penance and a holy life they might conquer the reign of sin in themselves”(Lumen Gentium, para. 36).  The laity have been given a place in Heaven, freedom from sin, if they lead the life Christ has called them to.  This is the completion in Christ, the faithful lead holy lives and are rewarded in Heaven.  This holy life includes the before mentioned acts of priest and prophet, and gaining the rewards of kingship.  This life includes all the aspects of lay life: family, work, technology, should all be done in the Spirit so as to bring this world closer to the Kingdom of Christ.  This distinction and resolution between society and Church is a primary responsibility of the laity.

Up until now, a very broad description of the role of the laity has been given, now the focus will be on two specific examples, the role of the lay family and the role of the laity as ambassadors to the rest of the world.  The Catholic view on politics has long held the view of subsidiarity, the idea that the smallest unit possible should fulfill its obligations, and  whatever it cannot provide then the larger unit should intervene to furnish.  What smaller unit can there be than the family?  From the family unit comes the basis for society and politics.  “Family life is an initiation into life in society”(Catechism, para. 2207).  Then what of the Catholic family?  It is within the family life that a mother and father primarily express the holy life of Christ.  The family is their community in which they practice the virtues of faith, hope, and charity, by teaching and raising their children in the faith, and bringing each other closer to Christ.  The Catholic family should be an example of the faith to society.  I recall a story of my great-great-great- grandfather, John Emanuel.  He had settled with his family near North Bend, NE, and when settled, John set out with a friend at three in the morning on Palm Sunday in 1870.  He walked across the plains on foot, no roads, swimming across streams, in search of a Catholic Church and made it that day just in time for Mass.  From then on the entire family would go every Sunday to Mass in the family wagon or sleigh.  This is an example of the past, an example today is that of Mary Jo Copeland, who has spread the love of her family to society’s lowest.  Two excellent examples of the Catholic family working with the faith God provided them. If the family is a basis for today’s society, then it follows that the family has a large part in society’s problems.  The Catholic family should take its lead from Jesus, Mary, and Joseph and be examples of strength, hope, and love in today’s society.

The idea of the laity as ambassadors is summed up in one simple question:  who spends more time with the outside world, the priest or the layman?  In today’s Church where the ratio of priest to lay increases daily and the priest finds himself with more responsibilities than ever, it is the laity that express the ideas of the Church to the world.  An example of this is suffering, something universal to all.  So few Catholics truly understand it and even less does today’s society, the priests can’t handle every case of suffering, it is the laity who should be there in place of the priest to comfort and console, and to explain the need for suffering in God’s plan of mercy.  “They have the right and duty, individually or grouped in associations, to work so that the divine message of salvation may be known and accepted by all men throughout the earth”(Catechism, para. 900).  Christ was an ambassador sent by God to bring all men in Him to God, the laity are ambassadors sent by Christ to bring all men into His Body.  To be like Christ is to be His ambassador to the world, whether in family example, work, or life in general, the Catholic laity take a primary role in bringing all men into the one Body of Christ, the Church.

In a world without sin, the role of the Catholic laity would be simple, the world would be Heaven and all would be a part of it.  There would be no need for ambassadors and models, the laity would be everyone.  But in this world there is suffering, sin, temptation, and evil, so the laity must fight, they must fight the fight of Christ.  Here, today, in this society, the laity must be like Christ, and in doing so they must model Christ to the rest of the world.  One billion Catholics, one billion examples, as Christ was so must all of us be.  Heaven is not reserved for the ordained, Christ has brought salvation to all, but all must lead the holy life that they are called to in Christ.
